Well, I thought why not:
I decided to experiment a little further and downloaded a couple of ‘Ping’ internet tools, but the one that I found the easiest to use was called “Ping Test Easy 3.17″ which was available as a free download at:
http://www.freewarefiles.com/category/internet.php
The average millisecond time was 67, pretty impressive and a lot faster than the traceroute – I thought.
Maybe this is because traceroute is more intended to find the route that the information is taking, whereas ping seems more about verifying and locating the IP address. Not that I really know…..just a summation. Might be that I am completely off the track here, but it was fun trying.

I found it reassuring that there were some tools that allowed a trace to be made on an ip address. But wow, 19 hops from one site to the next is amazing…I never realised that there were so many routes needed in one traceroute. Its pretty amazing that whilst the information has to travel a long road, it happened in a few seconds.
The IP Address for hostname curtin.edu.au is: 134.7.179.56

Well that was easy! In fact I am worried that I found that too straight forward. The download was simple and straight forward. The FTP (File Transfer Protocol) task to recall.curtin.edu.au was no problem and locating the README file was also no hassle. So my dilemma.
Even though I completed the task, I am not 100% confident that I understand the whole concept. So off to the internet site to read more about it……..!
BUT, I did learn the answer to the all important question:
‘CAPITALIZATION MATTERS’
Okay, so following a full on working week and ferrying teenagers from one spot to the next, I found my mind wandering back to the whole ‘FTP’ concept and decided to investigate further. What I found was that without really knowing, this is something that almost automatically happens when we send files over the internet, without even knowing that it is using ‘FTP’ to transfer the file. I think I tried to over analyze, but it seems it simply is a way for transferring files from one computer to another.
The whole anonymous thing kind of makes me wonder though.. It seems that someone wanting a certain amount of anonymity, could easily utilize this method to share illegal documents, audio’s, photos, games, etc and not have to worry about someone looking over their shoulder. Hey, many of us are guilty of doing this, who hasn’t at least thought about downloading a song or two. Not me of course
But do we draw the line there, is it okay. Not really! That’s someone else’s property that you are downloading for free. Or then there are the really bad users who use this forum to exchange such things as pornography, anonymously. I don’t know how big this problem is but I get the feeling from media coverage that it is fairly large scale.
Having said all that, it seems that without File Transfer Protocol (FTP), the internet, the world wide web, would not be the wonderful and exciting platform that it is today. How else would we exchange those ‘big’ files?

telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl
My senses were illuminated with this display of what this text based protocol, [http://www.dallasjones.com/internetglossary.htm#T], that was developed in 1969[ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telnet], was capable of. Althought it certainly lacks the ‘ooomph’ of the real thing, it was impressive.
Sadly for me, a Star Wars fan from way back, I could practically recall the script word for word as it scrolled across the screen…..
That is a bit tragic! May the force be with you!

Oh finally…..finally thank god this is done. I did find this very tedious and time consuming….couldn’t get the whole telnet thing to work initially….the old tearing the hair out in frustration. Walked away and had a think !!! Came back and sat back down…. I knew I was close, had the telnet screen but couldn’t get the address to work….to the rescue, fellow student and discussion board postee, Colin McAuliffe, who had enlightened me as to what I was doing wrong. Hey just leave off the :// and typed in the telnet window; “telnet library.deakin.edu.au” and hey presto it worked. So after much time and hair pulling I can now say this task is complete. A big thanks to Colin
. Must say that the result was not all that impressive….reminded me of the old ‘dos’ days. My senses were not all that illuminated…..spoilt as we are today.
Onwards and upwards to task 2!
The result of Task 1 is copied below:
